Alaska 2007: Newhalen Lodge Journal
(In the summer of 2007, two of Wing & Fly Company's fly fishing guides went to work for a well-known fly out lodge in the Iliamna Lake region of Alaska. The journal entries are factual, but we do not endorse this lodge due to some of their business practices and sporting ethics. During the latter part of the season, guides actively and consistently chum with eggs, often snagging salmon solely for that pupose. One of the partners who is also a pilot, operates recklessly and has been indicted for several game violations associated with guiding bear hunters.)
June: For the most part, we've had great weather. Most of the snow is almost gone from the lower mountains and the streams are clearing up pretty quick. Rainbows are still holding in pools, but they are moving around more now, anxious for the return of the salmon. Not many bears yet, but a few have been spotted checking out the creeks.
July: Still very nice for the most part. Many sunny days. Every river in the Iliamna system is full of sockeye salmon and the trout eagerly await the egg-fest that is to come soon. Fishing for sea-run Dolly Varden on the coast along with Chum Salmon. Lake trout fishing has been good a few days here at the lodge. Rainbows are also taking some mouse patterns on a few of the smaller rivers.
August: Historically, this month has more rainy days than any other, and so far it's holding up to par. We've been blasted with 30-40 mph winds and scattered showers every day. Daytime temperatures are in the low 60's. Silver salmon are showing up in good numbers on the coast and the average size for rainbows is increasing.
August 10th: Silver fishing is still sparse, but good! This week has been very warm and sunny. Weird and big change from last week. Bears are everywhere.
August 20th: Coho salmon are definitely in. Caught the first one on a topwater fly today. Had to make three casts to catch our limit of three silvers on clouser minnows. Really tough right! Weather is good overall, at least no planes flipped over this week, unlike last.
September: The sockeye spawn is starting to slowly wane, but overall the fishing is still good. Some pigs being caught every day. Still some weird weather, have had thunder twice, which is unheard of in AK. Bears are starting to get fat, and the wolves are quick to steal a salmon from them if they can.
