| COMMUNITY WILDFIRE PREVENTION PLANS North Carolina potentially has the highest acreage of Wildland-Urban Interface area in the United States, with over 8500 communties identified as high/very high risk to wildfire damage. There were 13,459 homes in NC protected from wildland fire in the combined years of 2007 and 2008. CWPPs are recognized as the most appropriate planning tool to identify and address communities which may potentially be threatened by wildfires. CWPPs will supplement the county Hazard Mitigation Plans and will also supplement the State Hazard Mitigation Plan. Recognized at-risk communities will be recommended for FIREWISE programs in order to reduce hazards through fuel reduction, prescribed burning, infrastructure improvements, or fire department training.
