Public Education- For Everyone,Young and Old
Wildland Forestry & Environmental is a company who is committed to helping educate everyone on a variety of natural resource subjects.  There is a special attraction between people and nature.  The natural wonders around us often seem mysterious and amazing at the same time.  By unlocking some of the answers to the wild's secrets, we grow a bigger capacity to appreciate the diversity on our local landscapes and ecosystems. To assist educators in their quests, our staff members are available on a limited basis to help with presentations, projects, or interactive activities.  Browse the categories below to find the right service to meet the needs of your school or organization.

Elementary School  Excursions $5-10 per child

Students at this age learn through a variety of stimulations.  We generally try to introduce children to experiences in nature which will develop a later interest in learning about it.  A lot of seeing, touching, and hearing is utilized to keep kids focused on the lessons without getting bored with too many facts.

Some examples of successful programs include:  stream insect sampling, scavenger hunts, leaf collections, & tree planting ( or tree adopting).

Middle & High School Projects and Presentations

By this age, most students have a basic understanding of geography and biology .  This is a critical time for environmental education, when practical knowledge meets critical thinking.  These adolescents and young adults are forming their own opinions about world affairs and can sometimes develop "tunnel-vision" from a narrowly presented perspective.  It's important to present a broad base of science from multiple angles to enable our future leaders to consider the costs and benefits to the environment from human impacts.  Call to schedule and specialize a program.

Adult Tree & Native Plant Identification Course $50/person

This program is designed for the landowner, homeowner, landscaper, or any outdoor enthusiast who wants to know more about the diversity growing around us.  Due to scheduling, this course is only offerred when sufficient numbers of participants have expressed interest (>8).  The course is based on the identification of a minimum of 50 native tree species and 20 grasses/forbs, but the pace of the class depends on every student's enthusiasm and there is always time for additional plant information to be included (basically, all questions will be answered).  Both the common and scientific names will be utilized, as well as uses for commercial and recreation interests.   This course generally runs 1 evening per week for 4 weeks, each evening session is 2 hours.  Other arrangements available for small groups or alternate scheduling.  Available year-round.

Example Species
Common Name        Scientific                 Botanical Family
Longleaf pine           Pinus palustris         Pinaceae

Natural History:  This is the state tree of NC.  It was heavily used for naval stores and building materials during settlement.  In modern times, it is prized for its tight grain and is sometimes marketed as "heart pine".  It is the primary source for pine straw used in landscaping.  Due to it's adaptation to frequent fire, it is the preferred timber type for populations of Red-cockaded woodpeckers, an endangered species.
