Species Selection Nearly all fisheries publications will recommend stocking only two or three species in a pond for maximum productivity. While this is sound science at face value, it really only works when the pond is actively managed. After fishing for two decades, the staff here at WFE unanimously agrees that the best fishing we've experienced has been on ponds and small lakes which had good species diversity. While we will concede that none of those ponds had the biggest fish or the most fish, for everyday fishing, they are the most productive. Because the different species utilize different areas of a pond at different times, there are very few days when something isn't biting.
(Owner note: My favorite pond is located in Apex, NC. I have never had a bad day fishing there and it contains the following: largemouth bass 1-6 lbs., huge bluegill, large redbreast sunfish, 2 lb. black crappie, 2-5 lb. channel catfish, and common carp up to 10 lbs.)
